Purchase swisspass at Sbb train station but require photo

Today, I walk in to sbb train station and would like to purchase Swiss travel pass for my family who will be in Switzerland for holiday. Upon request I had been told to provide the photo of my family and passport number.i understood passport number is to clarify the identity but why I need to provide the photo? Can someone help me to clarify is it necessary to provide traveller photo when purchase Swiss travel pass? Thank you

Thank you for your request.

If you buy the Swiss Travel Pass for foreign guests, we only need a copy/original of the pass and no photo. I suspect the person at the counter misunderstood you and meant that you want to buy a Swisspass with GA / Half-Fare travelcard / route subscription. Sorry for the confusion.
