As there are two different train companies operating the line from Bellinzona to Airolo, I wondered if you took the IR26 or IR46 train or the S10 train.
In Switzerland, you are required to have a valid ticket before boarding the train. A purchase receipt is not a valid ticket. For e-tickets the QR code must be available and presented upon ticket check. If you fail to do so, you will pay a surcharge of at least a CHF 30. Free Wifi is provided in stations yet not on trains.
How you were treated by the staff we cannot judge. As soon as you tell us what train you took, we can tell you the train operator, it’s either SBB, or SOB.
