In Switzerland very few trains have mandatory reservation, and most trains you cannot even reserve.
So wherever you read that reservations are mandatory is just making things up.
You must reserve the Glacier Express, the Gotthard Panorama Express, and the Panoramic cars of the Bernina Express. That is less than a handful of trains. All the other trains you just get on at leisure, and just show your pass to the ticket inspector when requested.
