The purchase of a reduced fare ticket is totally independent from whether you already have a valid half fare card/pass or not, as this is not cross-checked during the purchase process.
You must be in the possession of both (valid card and ticket) only while actually traveling with them, as this will only be checked during a ticket control in the train or bus.
