You don’t need the half fare card for buying tickets, as this is NOT checked during the purchase process. Simply make sure that in the passenger details (where you specify your name and birthdate, either as guest or with a login), the correct “half fare” reduction option is selected, so the best ticket options with correct half fare prices will be displayed for your intended itinerary.
You’ll need the half fare card only during a ticket control in the train, as a proof that you are entitled to travel with half fare tickets instead of full fare ones.
