We bought tickets on SBB apps and received QR code. Do we need to validate/ scan QR upon boarding?

No, the QR code will be checked in the trains in Switzerland. Don’t forget your physical passport or identity card.

You must either show your physical original passport, state identity card, or driving licence. Copies or photos on smartphones are not accepted. If you do so, your ticket is invalid; you are subject to pay the surcharge for travelling with an invalid ticket, which is CHF 90 per person, and a new ticket.

A driving licence is not a valid ID in Europe. In your case your will need your passport. A copy is not sufficient.
