Day Pass and reservations

Hi! I just bought a day pass (1st class) for myself and SO. Which to my understanding is hop on/hop off. One of the trains we want needs a reservation but I don’t seem to be able to access doing that from the app or website. It is 60 days out so is that potentially why I cannot reserve yet?

In Switzerland, no trains require mandatory reservations, except some Panoramic trains. You can find more details about seat reservations here:

The Geneva to Milan train is not entirely covered by your Day Pass. So you need an extra ticket. Easiest for you is to just buy Domodossola (which is the limit of validity for your Pass) to Milano on www.trenitalia.com. That ticket will come with a reservation. Till Domodossola you do not need a reservation, but can of course already take up your seats in the train if you want to.

Is that the only train you are taking that day (looks like it), then why did you get a day pass? Just booking a ticket Geneva - Milano would have been cheaper.

Krist oh geez. Welp, definetly didn’t understand how that works. So is it a seperate train or it just morphs when it hits Domodossola? It doesn’t look like the times match up? how do I figure out what time we will be at domodossola? Also is it something that can be purchased day of in case there is a time difference or delay or is that not smart?

Krist nevermind I see the time now, so are we able to hop off to do a cheaper fare a little bit after? or is it less complicated to stay on and pay the higher fare?

Yaishoathoom63 I add that it is essential to book the EC in advance, the trains are often sold out and you may find some discounted prices. It is not possible to buy tickets in the train.

Those trains are operated by the SBB until Domodossola, where an Italian crew takes over. So they are Swiss till then, and Italian after.

If you buy a ticket for the EC 39 from Domodossola (it leaves there at 16:17) you can indeed just board that train in Geneva, and stay on it till Milano.

Or you can detrain in Domodossola, and take a later regional train. In that case you will save a few Euros, and add about an hour travel time. Its up to you.
