EasyRide 90CHF insta-charged

Hello, I’ve been in CH for a few days now, and on my way to Zurich I thought I would also try out EasyRide.
I turn it on before boarding my train and the moment it switches on I am instantly charged with 90 CHF with no warning or notification. I thought it’s weird and I couldn’t find anything else related to that by searching online. Is it some kind of deposit that will be returned later? Thank you.

The reason for this can be found in the General terms and conditions (GTC) for EasyRide:

They must have a valid payment method. Using the payment method selected by the customer as his/her default payment method or for an individual transaction, SBB AG may reserve a predefined amount in advance (“pre-authorisation”) for validation purposes. This amount will not be debited from the customer’s bank account at the time of booking but will merely be reserved for SBB AG until final settlement at the latest and then released again immediately by SBB AG. It is not possible to start a journey or issue a valid travel authorisation if pre-authorisation fails.
The reserved amount will be used to settle the outstanding amounts. Any remaining amount will be subsequently released by SBB AG. By using the payment function, the customer agrees to the SBB AG pre-authorisation procedures referred to in this clause.

I think this is just a hold, that will be amended with the correct fare once you check out again. I assume this is to check that you indeed have sufficient credit before letting you travel. All “Pay as you Go” systems operated similarly. You will see the same when for example you use your CC to travel on the Underground in London, or on trains in the Netherlands.

The final settlement from EasyRide is issued on the following day. The difference to the reserve amount will be released with the final settlement. How quickly this process is processed by the payment card provider can vary from provider to provider, but usually within a few working days.
