Can I travel on an earlier train?

I have purchased two first class tickets (using the Half Fare Card) from Brig to Zermatt departing at 17:10. If we arrive at the station in time for the 15:10 service, are we able to board that one instead?

You are able to board earlier if you have Point-to-point tickets or Saver Day Passes. Check what type of tickets you purchased.

Have a close look at your ticket:
Actually, its validity period (or alternatively the only service it is valid for) is mentioned somewhere on it.

Yes I have Point to Point, Half Fare, 1st Class tickets so maybe we can board the earlier one if the stars align?

The ticket is valid 16/8 00:00 to 17/8 05:00 and the earlier train leaves at 15:10 on 16/8 so that seems to be OK. I can’t seem to see a service it relates to…

I forgot something. Some trains are the “Glacier Express” trains, designated as “PE” in the timetable. A reservation is mandatory on these trains, but you can take all other regional trains. BTW I didn’t find any train leaving Brig at 15:10. Or do you travel only from Visp to Zermatt?

Thanks for the extra info.

You are quite correct re there being no train from Brig at 15:10! We are actually travelling from Milan to Zermatt with the first part on Trenitalia and then from Brig onwards on SBB. The train from Milan Centrale departs at 15:10 arriving in Brig at 17:16 and departing Brig at 17:22 for Zermatt. (Our current booking from Brig departs at 19:51 but we’re hoping to make the earlier one).

Too many planes, trains and transfers on my spreadsheet!!

You can also change in Visp. If the train from Milan is on time you will have more time as in Brig, if the train is late you have direct trains from Visp to Zermatt every 30 minutes. Such trains are operated by the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, not by SBB.
