Is it possible that a ticket purchase is needed for children ages 5 and 2 on this trip that originates in Pontarlier France?

The route is Pontarlier -> Travers on a RegioExpress, after which we will continue on with a Savers day pass.

Yes, in France, children need a ticket from the age of 4. It costs the half of adult tickets, in this case 2.20 CHF from Pontarlier to the border. In Switzerland children pay from the age of 6.
