Travel with bike in Inter Regio train.

What are your experience of travelling with bikes in Inter Regio trains, where there is no reservation for bikes? I want to go in August 2025 on Monday from Basel to Göschenen (IR26), and I am wondering if it is a good idea. How many place there is in IR trains? How many place there is for bikes in IR trains? Is it better to choose Intercity with reservation?

You cannot reserve bike spaces on IR trains.

A prediction is not possible, all depends on the weather. On days with good weather the spaces are indeed limited. In case there are too many bikes, you might face a denied boarding. You have to stay flexible.

When travelling with IR26, be there early to secure yourself a bike space. As it starts at Basel SBB the chances to have a bike space is greather than when you would board at an intermediate station.
Furthermore, a Monday might not be as crictical as a Friday or Saturday/Sunday.

The theoretically available space (regardless of occupancy) is not determined by the ‘IR’ label, because many possible different carriage types are operated as IR by different operators. In some carriages, a larger space for luggage, bikes, strollers etc. may be provided, in others, your bike will basically be in everyone else’s way.
The IR26 (Südostbahn Treno Gottardo) rather belongs to the latter category.
