There is no way to establish “first use”. There are not ticket barriers, not pre boarding controls. You just get on the train and then, if there is a ticket inspection, show your ticket.
That is why electronic tickets have a fixed validity. For national tickets that is 29 hours, (One whole day till 5:00 the next day) but for regional mass transit tickets it is one to a few hours, depending on the distance.
That is why you do not buy such tickets in advance.

Cancel now if possible. Cancelling tickets on the day itself is not going to be possible.
