Help! Which tickets/passes?!

Help please! We (2 adults, 3 kids aged 7, 7, and 11) are going from Milan to Wengen (return) and spending 5 days in Wengen in June. I am so confused as to how to buy the best value tickets? I can easily buy a single ticket from Milan to Wengen for all 5 of us, first class. But there seems to be “passes” i see everyone recommend. Do i need to buy separate individual tickets to Switzerland and then buy some kind of family pass allowing us travel during our stay? We want to travel 1st class or a family compartment for the long trips as we will also have 5 suitcases. Thank you for any help you can provide!

What are your travel dated? Milan to Wengen in June could be affected by line closures.

But anyway, you can always just buy a ticket from A to B, for whoever is traveling. The reason passes are brought up is that in some cases passes offer you convenience and/or savings. Good passes for the area you are visiting are the Jungfrau pass and the Berner Oberland Pass. You will have to look in to these yourself to figure out if they are worth it.

Note that it is not because you have 5 suitcases that you need to travel in 1st class. 2nd class is just fine.

Thank you for your prompt reply. We leave Milan June 10 and then we leave Wengen back to Milan June 15th. What closures are you aware of?

Im confused about the passes because i think they are mostly for traveling within Switzerland? Rather than from Milan to Switzerland?

Should you plan doing the (expensive) Jungfraujoch trip, have a look at the Swiss Half Fare Card for adults giving you 50% discount on all mountain excursions (including Jungfraujoch) and also 50% on regular railway or bus tickets, including Domodossola-Wengen and back.
Furthermore, the SFHC entitles you to additionally get the (free) Swiss Family Card for your kids, so they will travel with you for free, including Jungfraujoch.

The validity of any ‘SBB’ tarif (pass/ticket) or discount starts already at Domodossola = last stop before the Simplon tunnel (= country border).

The passes are mainly intended for people who are travelling a lot throughout Switzerland and which will do a lot of transfers. Those multi-day-passes for tourists are called the ‘Swiss Travel Pass’ or the ‘Swiss Travel Pass Flex’. For your case, they are not sentical because you don’t seem to be travelling far distances.
There are also daypasses, notably the saver’s daypass. This is only a good idea if you have a single day where you trave a lot. If you travel far distances, a daypass of all of Switzerland can be cheaper than the route itself. The Saver’s Daypass however has dynamic pricing and is not refundable. For your two travelling days (arrival and departure), that might be worth a look. There are also children’s daypasses (which are incredibly cheap, just 19.- per day) which might be a very cheap offer for the children aged 7 and 11. The 3-year-old child travels for free anyways.
