Note that Roland’s response only applies to ‘single’ zone based tickets of regional fare networks (such as ZVV).
A single point-to-point ticket to a destination outside of the fare network (e.g. Zürich to Luzern) is however only valid in that one direction, even if the ticket is valid the entire day.
