Haute Route hike: sending luggage from station to station without a train ticket

We are hiking La Haute Route and want to send our luggage from Geneva (31/8/2026) to Zermatt (16.9.2026) - door to door or station to door. We will be starting our hike in Chamonix and will not have a train ticket from Geneva to Zermatt, but will have a train ticket from Zermatt to Geneva at the end of our hike. Can we use that ticket as the requirement to have a ticket for the length of the jouney so that we can send our luggage on the 31st for pick up Septmeber 16?

No, this is not possible as you will be in need of a ticket for the Geneva to Zermatt route.

You either have to trust on a private baggage transport service specifically for Haut Route hikers, there are quite a few of them, but, from personal experience I know, they are not cheap.

What concerns the railway, the cheapest option would probably be the purchase of a Supersaver ticket, or a Saver Day Pass, from Geneva to Zermatt which you ultimately won’t use; yes, it is sunk costs yet might be cheaper than a private baggage transfer service. You can choose any departure time in the day, whatever offers the lowest ticket cost (full fare tickets if you will not have the Swiss Half Fare Card).
