Night GA - is reservation necessary?

Hello everyone,

I just bought a “Night GA” subscription for CHF 99. One thing is not clear to me: can I really just hop on any random train after 7 p.m. and sit anywhere in second class? Or should I make some kind of reservation (maybe for the seat)?

Also, how do I know if the seat I choose has already been reserved by someone else?

Lastly, is it possible that a train is fully booked but I don’t know about it because I just hopped on without checking?

No one reserves seats in the evening in Switzerland, except in a few international trains.

Most people travel with GA or other travelcards, day passes, etc. The occupancy of the trains is unpredictable. In worst case you have to stand.

The usual tell tale sign that a seat is not occupied is that there is nobody sitting in it :-)
