Seats fully booked

I bought 4 tickets for my kids, partner and I to travel from Domodossola (Italy) to Basel (EC 30460 | 30460) for the 14th of August at 8:48h. Unfortunately it’s not possible to make a seat reservation for this (long) travel. Are all seats taken? Does this mean we’ve to stand for 3 hours? And is it possible to get a notification when someone cancel his/her travel so we can take his/her seats?

This train is not fully booked, currently about 90% of the seats are free. I think that reservations are not possible between Domodossola and Basel for this train, but I don’t except that a lot of people will travel with this train, or perhaps from later stops, but you will already have your seats. There might also be people leaving the train at Brig and freeing up seats. It is very unlikely that you have to stand for 3 hours.

thanks for your answer and help. How can you see that the train is about 90% unoccupied? If that’s the case, I feel a bit more reassured. I guess we have to take a chance 🙂

I tried to buy a ticket on trenitalia.com for this train. It is possible to choose seats on a map:

This train runs in two months, more seats will be reserved, but I don’t think that a lot of people leave Milan at 07:10.
